At around the 1 hour 9 minute mark on the above 2017 AGM video, Dr Giles talks about small iron ore quarries visible on Google maps (darker colours against the fawn background), that are within the Grants Iron Ore Basin or at the Grants iron ore deposit.

The Cutana, Grants and Alberts Fe quarries were all mined for ironstone as a flux during the 1890s for the smelters at Broken Hill.

The Cutana, Grants and Alberts Fe quarries were abandoned when Iron Knob ore was discovered in the Middleback Ranges of South Australia. The Middelback Ranges iron ore mines (including Iron Knob) are now owned by SIMEC and have less than 10 years supply of magnetite for SIMEC's Whyalla steelworks. Serendipity anyone.

The Grants Iron Ore Basin is enclosed by a Neoproterozoic fault line. The image below was selected in SARIG by clicking on ‘Neoproterozoic - Ordovician faults’ [under Geology - solid geology]:

For additional historical details on the Cutana, Grants and Alberts Fe Quarries, see the written report from 17 August 1962 titled 'Ironstone Deposits Radium Hill District'. Even Maldorky gets a mention on page 12:

In the above report it mentions 'Sturtian' formation a lot. The Braemar ironstone deposition occurred during the Neoproterozoic Sturtian glaciation period:

Lottermoser and Ashley (2000) describe the origin of the Braemar ironstone facies [like those at HAV’s Grants, Lilydale and Maldorky Fe deposits] as the result of precipitation of iron oxide from marine waters during episodes of renewed marine currents in restricted marine basins marginal to land masses, following melting of a ‘snowball earth’. Lechte and Wallace (2016) propose a similar process for formation of the iron formations, although deposition is proposed to have taken place under an ice shelf.

    Cheers
