I'm not sure it's a meaningless term in all honesty.
As we all know the expected rise in the use of electric vehicles, lithium, Cobalt and Nickel for the current batteries are well understood globally, this doesn't mean it won't be 'disruptive'.

Yes my excerpt is from wiki but I think it explains it well.

'A disruptive innovation is an innovation that creates a new market and value network and eventually disrupts an existing market and value network, displacing established market leading firms, products and alliances. The term was defined and phenomenon analyzed by Clayton M. Christensen and coworkers beginning in 1995.'

And hence disruptive technology.
