It was a good idea at the time to master the tech to harness customers and drive them to merchants for fees. They had a short moment in time to pivot to who knows what but they got bogged down in the mud trying to conquer the world and ended up with nowhere to go. The banks, reg's, costs and advanced tech have stacked up against them.
