To clear the radiation issue up - The heat source is the result of slow radioactive decay. This has happened over millennia and been contained underground by the covering strata.
The radiation levels are below the background radiation at the surface. In fact any release would probably dilute the natural radiation levels already at the surface.
If you want to live in a zero radiation environment you need to leave this universe as the whole universe is a sea of radiation.
