Its more that new 5G bands requires a lot more towers as the higher frequency is more directional and doesnt bounce around as much, so Telcos have to commit to all building heaps of new towers, or separate towers from the business model and use anything they can rent a spot on for their equipment.
Competition is still limited by available spectrum whatever happens with towers and equipment.
