Patrick Terminals take 'incredibly rare' steps with shipping containers

The stevedore operator has lowered all containers to a single height, including refrigerated containers, and staff have created wind blocks “baffles” using heavier containers to mitigate wind effects.

“For a large-scale terminal like this, it is incredibly rare — if not unprecedented — to see all containers on the ground at a single level,” says Patrick’s Brisbane terminal manager Matt Hollamby.

Refrigerated containers have also been lowered to single container height and these containers continue to be monitored every day to ensure consistency of temperature as they contain fresh or frozen products and produce.

Cranes have been boomed up and anchored to the concrete wharf.

The Port of Brisbane closed earlier in the week and all ships have since been evacuated. Many are out to sea or have avoided pulling in to berth at the Queensland capital.
