I think you're right. Scale (esp at a national level) provides the ability to pay for the content that matters, or to provide a content gateway to global giants. But also, I think having the direct relationship with the customers matters a lot. You want the customer to see you as the bundle provider - so that they don't have the hassle of dealing with multiple service providers. Not sure if that requires you to own the assets - but it probably makes it easier. If you are the place to go for broadband (or one of the few), there's a much better chance that you will also be the place to go for video - and that's on top of cross-selling opportunities.
