"Opposition energy spokesman Chris Bowen says 60 coal mines will be covered by Labor's proposed strengthened emissions regime but insists no jobs will be at risk as he accuses the Coalition of running a "lazy'' and "toxic'' scare campaign on climate policy.
Mr Bowen was responding to accusations from both the Coalition and the coal industry of planning a carbon tax by “stealth” with its policy to cut emissions from major industrial polluters as part of changes to the so-called safeguards mechanism which will apply to the biggest emitters.
Mr Bowen said 60 coal mines will be directly impacted by Labor's policy, across 215 of the biggest industrial emitters across the country. Coal mining companies will be forced to reduce emissions by either purchasing offsets – by buying carbon credits – or by investing in green technology. Carbon credit purchases are modelled to be around $24 per tonne of carbon.
Mining companies will work with the Clean Energy Regulator to drive down emissions, with the plan tailored to each facility, as Mr Bowen promised that Labor’s policy would create around 600,000 jobs across the country with five out of six of them in the regions.
Mr Bowen denied the plan would force mining companies to pay more, as he attacked the Coalition for reigniting the climate wars and pointing to the divisions boiling over between moderates and conservatives in their own party..."
A big tax hit on the way for miners if Labor/Greens/fake "independents" form a Federal Government after 21 May 2022!
AZJ is not a miner but will be indirectly affected if volumes lower as a result.
Shocking Labor/Greens policy. They should have learnt from last timer's failure but have such an irrational, pathological 'hatred of coal' that they're determined to do Australia great damage through massive taxes such as this.
