I'm quite negative on cinemas overall. Trend is clear - audiences are turning away due to high prices (1x adult ticket + popcorn/coke is ~$50 at my local Event) and availability of alternatives like streaming. I don't think we're ever returning to the pre-Netflix days, where a major release would be packed with people for at least the first several weeks. Now new releases would do well to fill half the cinema.
There are flukes once or twice a year, like Deadpool and Inside Out this year, or Barbie last year. But that's not enough to change the trend.
Largest cinema operator in US, AMC theatres, been losing money since the pandemic. Event New Zealand's losing $8m a year the past two years. I wouldn't be surprised if Australian cinemas also turn from profitable to loss making in the future. Being locked into long term leases at their cinema sites will make extricating themselves out of that situation tricky. All IMO.
