I am taking somewhat of an educated guess, but I think it's quite likely that the initial cellulose product is a short fibre.
The critical thing for textile industry will be length of fibre. Rayon is typically a long fibre.
Short fibres will either need to be broken down and reassembled into long fibre, or grown into long fibre, or the initial process modified so the resultant fibres are just longer. I think this would be the focus of the technology.
