I'm grasping as straws here trying to understand how so many people on this thread could misunderstand the use of placebo in implantable device trials and can only assume you are confusing the term 'placebo' with the term 'double-blind'.
To be very clear, placebos are routinely used in implantable device trials in the form of not implanting a device, however the patient would receive the standard of care treatment (in this case chemotherapy). The patients would also know if they received a device or not, meaning the trial would be 'open-label' rather than a 'double-blind' trial (where neither patients or doctors know whether you've been given a placebo).
For the record nobody is suggesting the patients be deceived into thinking they received an implant when they didn't, or being given a 'sham' implant or no implant at all without them receiving the standard treatment they would have received if they had chosen not to participate in the trial.
