I think it's also a bit unintelligent for we westerners to simply paint 'Africa' with one brush. Also, surely the Africa of today is not the same as the Africa of 20 or 50 years ago (?). There are many indicators that would suggest not.
Cliches & stereotypes are harder to turn than the titanic.
