The truth is exactly the opposite to your statement.
I'm retired now but I can assure you that in the 40 years spent in the scientific testing side of the medical diagnostic industry the speed at which
results can be determined for individual patients is HUNDREDS of times faster than the days when we would line up test tubes in a rack and add reagents and all the recording and storing of data was done manually.
This is because of the following improvements:-
1. Computer power. Vast amounts of info can be recalled and sent in milliseconds.
2. Barcode readers. Typing in details of a patient is rarely done now.
3. Fiber Optics. Reaction products are often measured by specific wavelengths of light. Time of the reaction is done accurately by computer.
3. Level sense readers. Sample volume must be known before testing is commenced.
4. Computer storage of samples. Vastly speeds up added tests.
5. Transmission of results. Delivering results by hand has been superseded.

The factories I worked in prior to graduating may have had some efficiency improvements like robotic welding, painting, QC etc.in the last 40 years but nothing like the speed improvements in the pathology industry.

Who benefits most from the efficiency advancements though?

Governments seem to benefit most as they effectively determine the margin on testing through regulated pricing. Best example of this being Australian pathology Medicare pricing not changing in 20 years. The company invests in technology to improve efficiency/cost and the public and government mostly reap the rewards. It's a good win for society.
