Like all of us, I'm still learning and would appreciate other's opinions on the short side of things. I don't know why the balancings for the S&P indices is not the end of March. I know it's all got to be done for the open on Monday the 18th, so it goes crazy on the previous Friday closing auction. I'm sure there are probably links on the S&P website that tell you why.
The end of the month/end of the quarter would be notable anyway, as many large funds would use those timeframes internally for measuring performance and balancing portfolios.
