Yes, the B in BHP does stand for 'broken'.
Reading up on BHP's history, broken meant 'disconnected' (not 'damaged' or no longer able to work).
BHP was based on re-examination of an ironstone outcrop known as the ‘broken hill’ (Figure 2). The Syndicate of Seven raised funds to secure additional claims over the immense gossan and eventually developed the deposit as the Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) in August 1885.
Figure 2 is shown in the attached PDF has a view of the ‘broken hill’ gossan during 1884.
