With the Whyalla project I believe the plan is stored H2 produced from solar powered electrolysis during the day will power gas turbine generators operating as a peaker plant.
A few other things going for the project is plenty of sunlight and unused land for solar, water supply pipeline from the Murray and existing desalination plant plus a second desal plant in the works, existing Steelworks and nearby iron ore mining.
Sum of the parts, could make sense ?
In an interview the energy minister reckons they hope to export green steel, rather than H2.
