I wouldn't be too concerned about some of the heavily disseminated sulphides being located in the black shale/chert layers. As I understand it, there will be variation in the mineralisation in the different layers according to the type of host rock, and shales are known to host Ni Cu PGE (https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1179/1743275812Z.00000000026?journalCode=yaes20). Also USGS state that in contact type Ni Cu PGE deposits, the mineralisation can also be found in the adjoining country rocks ( https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2012/1010/contents/OF12-1010.pdf). I think these type of deposits can be quite complex, with unexpected unique aspects not uncommon, and geologists seem to struggle putting them into tidy classification boxes. There are shales in the Bushveld complex.
