The "layers" are separate reservoirs, separated by near impervious rock columns. So must be isolated in the well bore that connects them. This is done with the steel casing and separating plugs, so that each reservoir is tested as a stand alone.
Some may confuse this, and think testing different sections of the same reservoir, with more than one fracture stimulation, is the same, it is not
