Evolution Mining is believed to be in the final stages of a process to sell its Mt Carlton gold mine, while announcing on Thursday it had purchased a $400m suite of assets in east Kalgoorlie from Northern Star. Following its $16bn mega merger with Saracen last year, Northern Star is also said to be in the late stages of offloading its Paulsens gold mine in Western Australia through PCF Capital.

For both companies, the assets are considered non-core and sub-scale as they have both looked to bulk up strategically. Sources believe that the most likely buyer of the Mt Carlton mine, 150km south of Townsville in Queensland, is Aeris or Aurelia Metals. Aeris purchased Evolution’s smaller Cracow gold mine last year for $125m.

Both the Mt Carlton and Paulsens mines are expected to sell for $100m each at the most.
Treadstone Partners, which advised Evolution on its purchase of the Northern Star Kundana group of mines and a capital raising worth up to $450m along with JPMorgan, is believed to be selling the Mt Carlton mine. It is understood to have high costs and about three years of life, with 170,000 ounces of reserves left. Last year, it produced 50,000 ounces.
