NEW YORK, May 21-The University of Adelaide will build a $32 million center for research into plant genomics, the Australian science and education minister said on May 10.

The new National Center for Plant Functional Genomics, projected to employ about 100 researchers, will focus on agricultural bioscience projects, primarily improving wheat and barley.

Australia's Research Council and its Grains Research and Development Corporation, two governmental research support agencies, will fund the center at $20 million over the next five years. The state government of South Australia has pledged to chip in another $12 million.

This new functional genomics center will be located at the university's Waite campus, which focuses on agricultural, horticultural and viticultural research.
