as an ex geologist I always knew smearing to be an unintentional increase in grade over an intercept in RC and Air Core drilling. in a DDH - I would consider it more fraudulent to spread an intercept over a wider area to misrepresent grade an tonnage.
I would not want to work for a company who mis represents the geology intentionally (there are enough unintentional errors to deal with before we start ripping off investors).
