I haven't been there, but I do know somebody that has. Whilst parts of Bendigo are as you describe, from what I am led to believe the mining site is every bit as remote as Macraes, 40 miles away as the crow flies. It is up gravel track into land which is unsuited for any other purpose and would only be visible after travelling a few miles into the ranges. Unlikely to meet any resistance from the locals as I understand it. There is no doubt the resource consent will take time, but then again, if it had already been granted market cap wouldnt be $35m anymore I suspect.
