yeah but it was a collision not a star burning out, those colisions are rare but can produce supernova type of energy temps and pressure required to form gold, and those stars that collided were already "burnt out" stars to to speak incredibly dense, even though the same mass as our sun much much smaller in size, just didn't quite make the grade for black hole.
