thanks for the correction, i had the wits in mind. once upon a time i worked for anglogold and had many friends from sa that had worked at these deep mines. that said, just because it is in south africa doesn't mean they are all the same.
perhaps gwalia is a better example, and it is here in our backyard. it is 1700m deep and includes a refrigeration plant to keep the ug cool.
depth is never the issue if the ore and economics justify the mining cost.
