You are correct, the grade will have to be good. The depth is not usually a problem providing the host rock is stable, and the grade is there.
South Africa has a mine (gold) that is nearly 4km deep. Now you could say, "but gold is over US$2000 per once. But that is only recently!!
So it is do-able providing the Ducks go quack, and all follow each other!
