Handy to be able to pronounce barium properly, i.e. bear-ium, and not with a short 'a'. Usually, English pronunciation tells us that a vowel preceding a double consonant is 'shortened'. An example: barrier has a short a sound, whereas bare has a long a sound. Easy, innit.
