I also think its a game where the brokers can withstand the buying and selling for days and actually dont' actually need to sell their index funds client shares on a particular day and may hold that long position for weeks countered by their short position so there isn't that much risk in them doing this. The index funds doesn't care as long as the cash is moved into the next stock in the index so there may not even be a physical transfer of cash and more just exposure to the next stock.
