Not sure about an acquirer shorting to accumulate, in as much as while the theory is possible the 'rub' is that if they sell short to buy long, what is their net position in the end? Will they actually get a sizeable position? And, if they buy off the index funds, how will all the other shorts cover? The only way out of this without some sort of eventual short squeeze is if ALL the shorts are covered by exiting index fund shares. It is possible....but who knows. We'll find out the real short position a week after the 20th I guess? And if your theory is right then we should see some significant shareholder notices around the same time (unless they hide using whatever means they do?).
Personally I'm interested in what will happen with the share price after the 20th when we might finally have some 'clear air'. Will it reflect 'fair value' or still be a plaything for the rich and greedy?
