They retired at 65, they spent most of what they had on The Big Trip, then lived on the Aged Pension supplemented by a much higher level of assistance from volunteer organisations like Meals On Wheels. They died much younger due to smoking, the grog and the cumulative effects on the body of much harder physical work back in The Age of Steam, higher levels of pollution and poor OH&S.
