WMC took three holes to discover Olympic Dam, the rest is history with over 10b tonnes of ore at 0.8% copper. Even OD contains a barren core, the mineralisation occurs in a Breccia which is a fractured iron stone (hematite/magnetite), this creates an issue for explorers as chasing these bodies can create a hit and miss approach until mineralisation is found and a geological model is determined as not all of the target may be mineralised. The size of these deposits creates a tantalising target and hence worthy to chase after.
