It is a reference point. But the study is just 20 people and main study design was to ensure "safety" and "t-cell response" before moving to a larger study. There is more to be 'made' from the results of the infected than the non-infected.
Next study will use a much larger sample size.
In addition, hsv1 and hsv2 outbreaks can be largely caused by stress. If placebo group had reduction, likely accountable to reduction in stress.
Although, how would they even find a hsv2 placebo group? con some poor sucker into thinking he/she has hsv2!?
