Dealing with the ATO is my daily task, don't really want to go into this boring area.
But if you don't believe me, just call the ATO and ask them the consequence of not having your ABN on your invoices.
Also, you need the ABN to lodge your quarterly business activity statement, even you local fish & chip shop has an ABN.
