The whole technology debate is an interesting one.

I'm a huge Warren Buffett fan myself and my feelings on the Apple investment have always been that it was a combination of him suddenly thinking about it in terms of it's strength as an irreplaceable consumer brand (similar to Coca Cola) rather than a technology company and also that the initial position was bought by Ted Welscher (one of his two investment understudies managing a smaller pool of capital at Berkshire) who then brought it to Warren and explained it in a way that gave him confidence to massively increase the stake.

In terms of how the anti technology bias applies to SOL I don't mind that they've had enough humility to admit it's outside their current skill set (although that may change if they bring a specialist in considering how much the headcount at their office has increased lately). Outside of TPG the small technology investment they do have is in Bailador which is an interesting little listed company with a portfolio of venture capital style tech investments.

I like the thinking behind agriculture as a long term investment although it's hard to argue that the industry has never seemed to work well in a listed format in Australia.
