For each logging run The Engineer will calculate the amount of pull on the cable that will part the cable weak point. Weight of tool, weight of the cable and type of weak point are taken into account in this calculation. A safety factor is then plugged in to give a Maximum Safe Pull (MSP). Usually an Engineer is only allowed to pull over 50% of MSP with a dispensation from his supervisor in town.
Leaving a tool on a station when there are indications of differential sticking...usually a sensible operator will risk assess the situation and take into account recommendations from SLB but in the end they can usually make the call to stay on the station knowing that if they end up with the tool lost in the hole they'll be paying for it.
It would be rare for an operator to intentionally leave the tool on station knowing there was a high chance of a fishing job.
