Ledges and bridges basically prevent you getting the tool below where they are. As soon as you hit the first ledge that you cant pass you're restricted to operating above the hang up depth.
If there are good candidates for a sample above the hang up point you would consider going for those rather than dicking around trying to get through the bridges or abandoning the run and going in for a wiper trip (usually ineffective when washed out coals are causing the ledging)
