re : overpaying in an auction - not quite.
If they are disciplined about it, the highest bidder only has to pay more than the maximum of what the second highest bidder is prepared to pay and not the maximum of what they themselves are prepared to pay.
For example, if Brookfield are prepared to pay $8 yet the highest bidder from all others is $6.50, then Brookfield can bid $6.51 and win the auction. In Brookfields eyes, they have not overpaid at all, despite what other bidders or observers might think.
