I am in the same boat with a SMSF
From my perspective, I am not doing anything at the moment.
I am with Commsec and currently, they do not extend their SMSF brokerage service to International share trading Accounts.
On their website, they say that SMSF International Trading is coming soon.

Can I ask which Broker you have your SMSF with?
