I agree with Hinch. A 5 second search on the net reveals some basic info on what is considered viable -
Examples of Open Pit Gold Mines:Toega Gold Deposit (West Africa): This mine has been drilled to a depth of 400 meters below the surface.
Kalgoorlie Super Pit (Australia): While not in Africa, it's a notable example of a large, deep open pit gold mine, reaching depths of around 600 meters.
