I'm actually a holder of Kalkaroo but I think they passed on it because it was too small for what BHP needs. They spoke quite positively about it and were adamant it would become a mine at some point, but too small for them. I'm guessing BHP just does not have enough manpower to take over say 20 deals like this vs 1 mega mine in Chile.
Then again, where are they going to find enough copper if they can't take Anglo over? How many giant projects exist in the western sphere? It's not like they can get access to deposits like Udokan. Africa's getting more dicey these days as well.
This is why I'm very much a fan of taking Anglo over, even if a small premium is paid. Mines with 50+ years of life are important for a company like BHP. But they also need to be aggressively pursuing other opportunities wherever they can find them.
