i think if your original question had been supported by something, actually anything, to suggest that there is some reason to think appointing a new CTO is "dropping the ball" it would have been met differently. Most people as you say, are happy to examine"different opinions", but usually they need a reason. Probably you just need to explain your thinking a bit? coz your conclusion about"dropping the ball" probably wasn't the first thing people think when they hear about a new CTO.
