As an APE shareholder in more recent years, I'd suggest Mr Martin Ward had an exceptional record at that century-old company over which he presided for 18 extraordinary years.
He massively expanded the business as it became Australia's largest passenger car retailer through a major acquisition in Perth WA, and concurrently grew shareholder returns.
AT AGMs, he normally gave detailed explanations that impressed analysts, although many of the latter were slow to realise how Mr Ward was building APE.
What he doesn't know about personal motor vehicles in Australia would fit three times over on a postage stamp. Great to see Mr Ward aligned with shareholders' interests even if initially (for him) it's in a small way, monetarily speaking.
