    Niobium can improve certain aspects of battery safety, but it doesn't eliminate the risk of thermal runaway. Other factors, such as manufacturing defects, external damage (such as the bottom of a battery hitting a rock on the road), overcharging, or overheating, can still trigger a runaway reaction.

    If there is a runaway fire then niobium reacts with oxygen to form niobium oxide fumes. These fumes can be irritating to the respiratory system and potentially harmful if inhaled in large quantities.

    Sodium ion batteries have no risk of a thermal runaway reaction.
