Exactly correct Mainholm. Additionally you'd have to say deep mining via a shaft is not usual these days. Think about ore going up in dinky little trucks in an elevator. Everything needed down there going the other way. Not impossible, just slow and time consuming. So ideally you need a decline - a bigger diameter tunnel winding around and down for fast access for bigger, more economical equipment. Really helpful to have some money making stuff to excavate on the way down instead of just waste rock.
Western Mining, which sold to Bendigo Mining which became Unity Mining tried to pull this off under the old Bendigo workings, dug their decline but never really got into the good stuff and pfft. Millions of investors' money down the tubes.
In short, the icing has been discovered first. Needs a cake.
