volumes are a good indicator, even small ones. It's always amusing to hear retail punters posting that falls due to low volume don't matter - there are countless instances where small volume trading has brought a company's sp down to 1/10 of former levels.
That aside, it remains that the majority of shares in most companies (being held by major holders) are never traded at all. Major holders tend to stay put even following a company to extinction. How many times have retail punters been surprised that due to a very large trading volume (say, 500,000,000 in a single day) there are no new substantial holding notices? easy, it's the same smaller volumes of shares being traded over and over....
Volume relates to momentum as much as anything else and can be indicative of accumulation/distribution but nearly as often as most appear to think.
