I think you are completely bang on. Why would he risk is career for a small cash gain?
My feeling is that this was a much larger lapse in governance and Gilman has been made the scapegoat (as CEOs usually are in these sorts of situations). I think that many shareholders will view this action from the board as satisfactory, and hence will not pursue further action (e.g. to replace board members).
Personally, my hope is that we see a brand new board with a renewed focus and new connections.
