Portsmouth, very timely, as today there was a long article in 'The Oz' where GNC's Corporate Relations Manager said (paraphrasing) GNC's biggest challenge was transporting the grain from 'upcountry' (the GNC term for 'from silos and bunkers in rural graingrowing areas') to the ports by rail and road.

She referred to a shortage of truck drivers (often a media topic) and also train drivers. I'm not sure the latter is such a problem as freight train driving pays well (way above what truck drivers earn) but it takes months of learning for the latter, including rail route knowledge and handling techniques (different for long freight trains than shorter, typically faster passenger trains). Some suburban/interurban train drivers in Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane may switch to freight train driving (requiring retraining).

With the shipping STEM, note that in one month shown, from the Port of Geelong (Vic) alone, GNC has exported barley, canola and wheat.

We can't exaggerate and suggest demand is 'infinite' but seriously, much of the world really needs our grains at present. Even some countries not known for purchases of Australian grain are allegedly on the buyers' list.
