As with anything new it has big holes. Security ones at that. Remember when internet banking was a crazy idea? Pretty mainstream now. Fiat currency would never float?
The blockchain has developed immensely in scale and now there are millions of computers corroborating on the chain so mining is becoming expensive. Hacking coins even harder.
I certainly have more gold than bitcoin but the risk over five years is certainly to upside with BTC.
