I note today's closing SP of $8.73"

With respect, I think that to compare IFL's share price for different levels of short interest is a near-meaningless exercise, for a number of reasons.
"I too listened to some of the Royal Commission proceedings concerning IOOF. Kelaher did not want to be there but at least he fronted and took the heat for everyone at IOOF, that is leadership. It was a pity he looked fairly uncomfortable but that is what you get paid the big bucks for."
Sure; that he did not "perform" well is something on which we can probably all agree.
But that is not the issue; the issue is whether anything has emerged that will lead to a fundamental valuation impact for the company.
"I am not convinced the short sellers are finished with IFL just yet. So I am not sure whether to add to my position just yet. The ex:div date is also a complicating factor.
I still remain confident for the investment case in IFL and as ever just trying to time my re-entry a bit better."
Yes, getting one's timing 100% right by buying at the exact bottom is nigh on impossible thing to do. And as for guessing what shorters may, or may not, do going forward is not something I spend much time on because:
a) I have no way of knowing, and
b) even if I had some idea of what shorters are going to do, they are just one grouping of the market's many and varied participants
