Prospecting in the Cooper Basin has rewarded Beach Petroleum with a well worth 1780 barrels per day. It is the third oil discovery in the Cooper Basin in as many exploration wells. The other two were discovered by Stuart Petroleum, in which Beach has a 25% stake, in April and July 2002. Beach managing director Reg Nelson said the Sellicks-1 well could begin production within six months. The company would undertake further tests to determine the Australian region's commercial viability, he said on 25 July 2002. As part of this, Beach will drill three more wells over the next seven weeks. He is hoping the further exploration will give Beach a number of "follow up targets".
