Every scientist knows that fly ash, silica fume, carbon nanotubes, carbon fibres, steel fibre etc. that are used in the concrete mix, all react and behave differently.
They all still work on the same principle. The finer the fiber/particle the greater the surface area and the stronger the bond.
The "The Economist" article about "Smart Concrete" is from 2012. Seems like the Iranian's made quite a breakthrough with their "immensely strong (480MPa) concrete using metal fibres and very finely ground quartz".
Basic concrete science. The finer the particles the stronger the concrete. Eliminating aggregate and using very fine sand is the foundation of making UHPC.
